Menopause is defined as the time in a woman's life when cyclic menstrual periods stop occurring for 12 consecutive months. Menopause most commonly occurs in women at about 40-50 years of age. During this time of change, the ovaries become less responsive to hormonal stimulation, thereby significantly decreasing the body's hormonal production.
This decreased hormonal production usually manifests symptoms that vary in intensity and duration. Most commonly, women experience hot flashes, fatigue, irritability, insomnia, nervousness, night sweats, palpitations, loss of bladder control, low libido, and vaginal dryness. In addition to these uncomfortable symptoms, other conditions are exacerbated by hormonal deficiencies. Osteoporosis, Alzheimer's, Heart Disease and High Cholesterol Levels can all be adversely affected.
